Development Update March 2016
Hi Guys,
I know you have been anxious for the March update but I wanted to have a few team meetings to clarify where we're at with development on all projects.

I'm going to post the pre-lim change log for Hawk (which is subject to last minute changes), a quick update on P-40 and other projects in summary.

Right now the coding team are 100% focused on Hawk and getting the big patch out to you.
This has allowed our internal development testers to really put the P-40 EFM through it's paces after the recent issues we've had with DCS 1.5 and 2.0 and so far so good.
The aim is by next week the coders can switch back to P-40 to get things finalised with the ASM/EFM interface and we are aiming to release end of April, all being well.

Hawk EFM is with the ED testers for feedback which we achieved at the end of Feb as I mentioned in last months update.

You've recently seen on our Facebook page that Rob posted up some skin shots of our Spitfire Mk. XIV. When we are closer to release on that I'll talk to ED about a co-ordinated release date as not to clash with their Mk. IX

Typhoon is still pushing forward on development as is Wildcat, Sea Fury, Buchon, Meteor and Vampire.
Bearcat is undergoing a make over of it's model by another artist and will join in the dev cycle when the model is complete.

So, let's focus now on Hawk.
As I said just now we achieved the goal of delivering the EFM and updates to ED testers by the end of Feb. With their feedback and that of our own internal testers, and that of the pilots, tweaks have been made and in my view the EFM is now complete.
The coding team, including myself, are busy making the final last minute ASM changes ready for the big update.

The preliminary changelog below is subject to last minute changes, additions and subtractions depending on any issues that arise in the next week during testing.
My aim is to have these updates in the next big patches for 1.5 and 2.0 from ED (I don't have dates for these yet before you ask).

Hawk Change List March 2016

Safety pins removed by default.
Backlighting on main panel altered.
Aim-9M LAU-7 pylon added.

There are still other things being worked on right now which may make it into the change log or may not make it in time for the patch.
They will be worked on even after the patch so keep an eye out for patch notes and future monthly updates.

I have decided not to come out of Beta stage until you, the public, have flown and given feedback on anything we may have missed or isn't quite working right.

I'd like to thank you for your patience in waiting for these updates and hope you like flying the Hawk as much as we do with these changes.

Thanks,
Chris and the team.

Additional bugs no doubt introduced.

Hey Guys,
Following a Go / No-Go meeting we just had and feedback from ED testers and our own testers I wanted to make a post today specifically about the Hawk patch and it's current state.
As you know we like to keep you informed every step of the way even if we are having problems.

Let me start by saying no one wants to get this big patch out to you more than we do and we are so very close

So where are we at....

With the 1.5.3 patch due this week you will get the new and improved cockpit textures.
There are still some things to be worked on but the main bulk of panels base textures have been re-worked.
Details such as screw heads, oxy switch, LP Fuel Cock lever Etc. will be in the next round of texture updates as our artist sources parts for his PC as it blew up, great timing I know.

The EFM is complete, has been tweaked and signed off by the real life pilots.

However; when we switch to EFM we lose all current sounds; cockpit and engine.
This is expected as the aircraft is not using an SFM flight model and therefore stock DCS sounds.
We have been working very hard to get our custom sounds working and this is the current state:
Inverter, batteries, fuel pump, gyro's and GTS startup/shutdown are all working.
Adour engine start up in cockpit - currently working.
Adour running idle with canopy open or closed in cockpit (different sound) - currently working.
Adour sound changes depending on RPM - partially working. The sounds are blending but pitch is not increasing or decreasing with rpm setting.
External engine sounds are currently not working.

We are having issues with the sound API and are working hard to resolve these. Hopefully in the next few days as good progress has been made over the last few days but we are simply going as fast as we can on it.

Radios are also partially working. In one of the recent DCS updates the ability for DCS to detect our engine RPM suddenly stopped working (you can see this with F2 view status bar).
This has a big effect on radios working.
ATC will not respond to you if you request taxi out, take off or landing as the sim thinks your engine is dead.
We are working with ED on this one as something changed in the core sim and the code they gave has stopped working.
Somehow this has also affected the ability to talk to wingmen, AWACS, JTAC and other units, which were working as you saw from an earlier video I posted up.

This is one of those head banging against a brick wall moments for us!!

Here is a summary of the Go / No-Go list for the big patch:
Cockpit textures - Go
EFM - Go
EFM damage model - Go
Cockpit Sounds - Go
External Sounds - No Go
Radios - No Go

So, with these last two items not fully working we had to make the decision that we would not make the 1.5.3 patch in time this week.

Yes we could have released without these last two items but I am not comfortable doing that for obvious reasons, as much as I want to get you the EFM.

We were fully confident that we would make it for the patch but as with all software development some things happen that you just can't explain and have to keep at it until it finally works, especially integrating with DCS. It's not as easy as some people think it is.

I hope you will enjoy the updated cockpit textures coming in the 1.5.3 patch and as soon as I know when the next patch is due from ED and the two remaining items are fixed you'll be the first to know.

Thanks again as always for your continued patience and support,
Chris and the team.

Edit > Here is a quick video showing you the sound issues we currently experience, as some of you wanted to hear the Adour starting up. https://youtu.be/smtug1ZbK4k

Hi Guys,
Here is a quick update on Hawk for April.

We have been battling with the sound API for DCS getting custom engine sounds working.
Our friends at Razbam have been helping us out trading ideas for what we've done and what they've done. More heads are better than one...

So far we have working cockpit engine sounds and are still working on external sounds using the API.

That being said, the EFM will be released in the upcoming 2.0.2 patch first (due to release schedule) which will give you the opportunity to fly and give us feedback.
It will then be in the next 1.5 patch whenever that is.

I'd like to thank you for your patience in waiting whilst we work through these issues.

Look out for the upcoming patch notes posted by ED.

We have been reviewing comments on the updated textures and are working to optimise them a little more, plus working on other details to make the whole cockpit better.

Thanks,
Chris.

pensa come era prima....  [:LOL]

Development update May 2016
Hey Guys,
Welcome to the May update.

Firstly please let me thank you all for the feedback you have given on the Hawk EFM Patch.
This was a significant patch that is now out in 1.5.3 OpenBeta, 1.5.3 OB Steam and 2.0.2 OpenAlpha.
We are listening to your feedback and reported bugs and are making a list of things to look at.
Right now we have a High, Medium and Low list and the bugs reported are categorised based on priority.

The biggest one we have been working on is the falling out of the sky issue. We have posted a potential fix today for 1.5.3 OB users and have uploaded the files to ED for 1.5.3 and 2.0.2 next patches.

This has obviously been the top priority to get the fix working and out to you.
The remainder of the items highlighted are being looked at in the coming days/weeks so keep an eye on the patch notes during the next updates from ED.

This was a significant patch from the old SFM version that's been out a while with a lot of updated working items. If you think stuff still isn't working quite right or you're not quite sure how/when something is working then please let us know in the Bugs forum section.
Any question is a good question, there are no dumb questions around here.

If you have the time and would like to become a VEAO tester to try things out before they are released then please drop me a line and we can get you on our dedicated testing team which helps to highlight bugs with updated DCS release before they go public.

Next week is a big week for our military side of the business with the ITEC show in London.
And I am proud to announce that we have set up a joint venture company called Porrima Simulations with our partner company Eventuality.
We have been working with the team at Eventuality for a lot of promotional events for Breitling, the RAF and many others.
The Porrima JV has been set up to facilitate this side of the business so if you see our logo around with Porrima you know it's us.

P-40F
With the release of the Hawk EFM patch this meant that some of the team could go back to P-40F which is our next priority to get out to you.
A lot of the features and bug fixes we encountered in Hawk has put us in good stead for the P-40 and future aircraft; things like radios, EFM issues, Etc.
I've read a lot of comments about wasting time on Hawk and to concentrate on P-40; however as I've just said these issues would have come up on P-40 as well so it's good we get them sorted before the module is released.
Right now the team are busy on getting the lower priority items ready like missions, encyclopedia, desktop graphics and the like.

Other Aircraft
Work is ploughing ahead on the Spitfire, Wildcat, Vampire, Meteor and of course Typhoon.
There are all in various stages of development and Pete has been posting some updated pics on our Facebook page so keep an eye out over there and subscribe.
https://www.facebook.com/VEAO-Simulations-130582376992838/

Towards the end of the month when we're back from ITEC I'll post a more comprehensive update.

Keep an eye out for the patches from ED, post bugs and questions and again thank you from the team for reporting and querying issues.

Chris and the team.

Hi all.
It's very rare that I post in the forums but now I feel compelled to tell you of the background behind the exciting developments coming to the Hawk version 2.

The thing is Ells is a modest chap so you won't know the amount of work he puts into rectifying the Hawk and how much he cares about the product.

The pressure is really on VEAO at the moment with the imminent release of the P40f and, as a result, Pman and his teams are working flat out on producing, what I believe, will be a fantastic warbird in every sense. But there has been little resource left for our little Hawk.

However Ells and I have been secretly working on this new update for the last few weeks and I have to say it has been an absolute pleasure to watch and learn. From working with 3D models to understanding program structure and module coding Ells has worked tirelessly and as a result we can bring to you now a major update to the Hawk.

So what's the big deal.....

Well right from the beginning Ells has always wanted to have 2 seat capability in the Hawk but we have always hit problems when we tried to implement it. The final straw was when the L39 came out and we realised that we would have to rewrite the entire Hawk code as (learning from the L39) ED coding required separate instances of clickable j based on seat occupied. Our Hawk was coded such that all cockpit switches were available from either seat. This meant in practice that you may be able to mouse over and click on forward cockpit switches from the rear seat through the front ejection seat. Clearly undesirable . This lead Ells to reluctantly announce that the rear cockpit would not be available until after a complete code rewrite.

Then we had a eureka moment.

We found that, buried in the code, there was a maximum distance which, once exceeded you would no longer be able to operate a switch with the mouse. The rear cockpit was again viable!

Many thanks to Alex at ED for his help in uncovering this and many other programming functions in DCS world

Now it was dark back there in the rear. Half the gauges didn't work properly, no lighting, misplaced 3D objects and no inter connectivity with the front cockpit. The weapons panel had to report and indicate switch selections in the front and we couldn't get the rear head position to work correctly. All in all we produced a list of over 25 project stopping bugs which, as mentioned earlier, Ells enthusiastically worked through, with me, to the end result that I can now tell you that we have single player rear seat capability in the Hawk and the view is great from back there!

If you're using track i/r or VR you can look round the front ejector seat and see everything functioning correctly in the front and the elevated seat position is great for take off and landing. You can even map a joystick function to swap seats on the fly for the best of both worlds.

Whilst working on the rear seat we also took the time to rectify and energise some of the systems that were non functional in Hawk version 1. We now have working brake pressure gauges and transponder functionality anyway, Ells will let you know the full list of upgrades in due course.

I was very fortunate to be given by a friend of mine, who used to fly the Hawk, an original Hawk t1 ,hard bound, flight manual and checklist, including hand written notes. I've scanned the checklists and emergency checklist into the kneeboard so that now, when you fly, you'll be using the actual checklist that's travelled at 400Kts through the valleys many times in the real Hawk. It's a testament to the ASM coding by The team that the checklist works very well with our Hawk.

That's it from me. I'm sure you'll hear a lot more from the guys about further improvements to the Hawk in future including new textures and multiplayer capability etc etc. But, as I said at the beginning, Ells is a modest chap and I just wanted to convey the excitement and pleasure, I've seen in him bringing, to you, something ,I know, he's wanted you to have all along........ Enjoy.

Hey Guys,
Many thanks to Jav for his help over the past few weeks. Without him we wouldn't be seeing the rear seat for quite some time!!

OK so first caveat, this is very much Work In Progress.
We have made great strides over the past few weeks and even today I am still working on stuff getting it ready for the next DCS patch.
YES, you will be flying in the rear seat with the next DCS patch!!

So, what can you do in the back?
Here's a long list:
Rear seat switching implemented for single player including functionality:
Press 2 and 1 to switch cockpits (can also assign to joystick).
Click spots updated for rear seat functionality.
Flap and gear control (clickable and joystick) implemented, including emergency flap and gear.
Flap and gear indicators functional.
Hydraulics and brake pressure gauges implemented.
Parking brake, Anti-Skid, Oxygen switch and AC/DC buttons all implemented.
HSI, Standby ADI, DGI and pressure settings switches, buttons and knobs functionality implemented.
All rear cockpit dash gauges implemented.
HSI Tacan / ILS navigation and glideslope functions implemented.
Beacon light and test implemented.
Accelerometer reset implemented.
CWP indicators functional including test switch.
Attention light reset switches implemented.
Land/Taxi light switch implemented.
Cockpit lighting switches, including dimmers, implemented.
Cockpit lighting WIP for FPS improvements.
CCS box implemented; VHF/UHF/ILS/Tacan (tune radios in front cockpit).
Canopy locking lever and safety catch implemented. Note: there is no grab handle in the back, press LCtrl+C to close or front cockpit grab handle).
Engine start / re-light sequence implemented. You can start the jet from the back but some switches in front need to be set (Ignition, Battery, LP Fuel Cock and Fuel Pump).
Weapons indicator panel functional and tied to front cockpit switch functionality (indicator lights show what has been set in the front).
Weapon override switch functional (set to override to disable firing of weapons).
Weapon jettison button functional.

Multi-Crew:
Ability to ride-along in the rear seat in Player 2 slot on multi-player servers.
Although some switches are functional, the front and rear seat switches and ASM functions are not synchronised apart from the main gauges.
EFM has not been written for this function either, so you cannot take control and fly from the back just yet.
Simply join an MP server and as long as there is a player in a Hawk in Pilot 1 slot, you can join in the rear cockpit in Pilot 2 slot.

As I mentioned in the quarterly update, the ASM and EFM multi-seat functions will take quite some time to write and we will keep you informed along the journey.

The rear cockpit has not had a texture pass yet. These will be updated with the front cockpit when Gibbage does his magic work on them.

We are recording a video over the next couple of days which I'll post up the link for.
I'm also aiming to write a rear seat guide this week, again I'll post a link.

Regarding night lighting; I have implemented a new technique in the rear cockpit and need you guys to test it for me and report back your FPS. I'll post more details towards the end of the week.

For now, ask any questions you feel like and I'll try to answer them.

Cheers,
Chris.

A little update June 2017
Hey Guys,
Just a little update on items I'm working on with Hawk right now.

A lot of my time has been spent working on getting Hawk looking good in 2.1 and it's upcoming patches.
PBR and deferred textures is a new thing for me to understand and it's always good to learn new skills right?

I'm still currently tweaking cockpit lighting and external lighting (nose wheel and nav lights) and this is an ongoing task with changes that ED make to the sim.
I do feel however that the lighting is looking way better than the old way and I'm still tweaking bits until I'm comfortable it represents the real cockpit lighting, so it won't be in today's patch but should be in the next one.

One of the things I have to do is make sure that the lighting effects also work in 1.5.6 that doesn't use the new engine. So again this is as important as tweaks for 2.1.

Talking of cockpit; the new textures are well underway and the entire front and rear cockpits have currently been completely UVW re-mapped allowing for some serious upgrades to the textures to PBR for DCS 2.1 and similar for 1.5.6
I'm excited to see what you guys think when they land in a future patch.

I've also been working on a few bugs like sidewinder tone, AHRS topple and some more off the list. These are still on-going.

So just to clarify; work is still ongoing on Hawk despite what some are saying on social
media and forums and as soon as things are done and tested thoroughly they will be patched.

Many thanks,
Chris.
